Hindang Cave : A Hidden Gem in Leyte

Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Leyte lies Hindang Cave, a natural wonder previously known as Bontoc Cave. However, to prevent confusion with another destination, it has been aptly renamed Hindang Cave. As a native of Hindang, I've witnessed firsthand the growing interest in this captivating spot, drawing visitors from neighboring towns and beyond.

During peak seasons like summer and Christmas, Hindang Cave buzzes with activity as vacationers, or "bakasyonistas," flock to explore its wonders. My own journey to the cave on January 1, 2015, marked another memorable visit, where I encountered fellow explorers from Matalom Leyte and various parts of Leyte province.

Embarking on a hike from the nearby San Vicente chapel, the entrance to Hindang Cave is just a brief ten-minute walk from the highway. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a picturesque view of the cave from the "patag," or plateau, offering a glimpse of the adventure to come.

The entrance area has undergone developments, now featuring designated parking spaces and two sari-sari stores offering souvenirs, refreshments, and snacks. A friendly attendant collects a nominal entrance fee of 20 pesos, with an additional option for thrill-seekers to experience the zipline for 180 pesos.

Hindang Cave offers an array of activities to suit every adventurer's preference. From leisurely picnics amidst the tranquil surroundings to encounters with the resident wild monkeys, there's no shortage of excitement. Visitors can also marvel at the intricate rock formations within the cave, home to a colony of bats whose presence adds to the mystique of the experience.

While the monkeys may be accustomed to human presence, feeding them is strictly prohibited to preserve their natural behavior. Instead, visitors can observe these fascinating creatures from a respectful distance, perhaps offering a banana or two from afar.

As visitors explore deeper into the cave, they may encounter the unmistakable scent of bats' urine and feces. While it may be less than pleasant, it serves as a testament to the thriving ecosystem within the cave, a delicate balance of nature's marvels.
